As a beginner, you have no idea what you need and are probably winging gardening like you would when you start anything. Please don’t be discouraged. Everything that you do starts as a beginner. I started gardening when I was a kid since my folks loved gardening, and I still don’t know everything or have a brain fart and forget a tool that I need. Sometimes, my dog will run off with my gloves and slobber all over it. I’m sure you can imagine: running after an 80 lb. Pitbull to get a soaking wet glove back because he doesn’t want to feel left out.
When you start gardening, there are tools that you will need to help you. They vary from your arms and hands to essential tools. These tools will NOT break your bank.
Here are some things that you’ll need to start gardening.
1. Hands or Gloves

Having your hands help you is one of the best resources you can have. Plus, it’s free!!! Putting your fingers in the dirt lowers your serotonin levels and relaxes you. It decreases your depression naturally. As for bonus points, your hands are free to use! If it’s free, it’s for me (well, you).
You can buy inexpensive gloves at your local gardening center, dollar store, or Amazon. Make sure that they are comfortable for you, though. That is an essential part!
2. A Watering Source
Having a watering source is one of the most important things that you need for your gardens. Your water source could be a hose, watering can, or sprinkler, depending on what you have in mind for your ideal garden. Look into your garden beds at least once a week to make sure that they aren’t dehydrated.
3. Pruning Shears
These are for cutting back your flower bushes or thick foliage to beautify your gardens. Suppose you think of pruning shears that are slightly bigger than gardeners used for landscaping for mansions.
Pruning shears are also great when you are determined to cut some roses for your house. They help you not get cut by the thorns as badly as without them. But, in any case, please be careful when you are cutting back anything. You never know what can be there when you do.
4. Leaf Blower
Leaf blowers can be pricy, depending on what you are looking for in one. Battery-operated ones are fantastic because you don’t have cords to pull on to extend your reach in the yard. Plus, they usually hold a reasonable charge. Leaf blowers are great, especially after a hard day of yard work—only a few quick motions to get those leaves out of your yard and into your neighbor’s.
Okay, in all seriousness, though, they are fantastic to use to blow away tree clipping that you missed while cleaning up your yard. One, two, three, and now your yard is beautiful again!
5. Wheelbarrow
I love a good wheelbarrow. A wheelbarrow that doesn’t have a flat tire or makes your klutziness worse than it already is. Having an old, uneven wheelbarrow that makes you fall over doesn’t help, especially when your neighbors laugh at you like you are doing a skit on SNL.
Wheelbarrows are great for when you are mulching your flower beds, throwing a lot of weeds in there, or even if you want to put your kids in it and have playtime.
6. Spade or A Trowel
Spades or trowels are good for digging small holes to plant seeds in your garden. They are also helpful in weeding or getting out your frustration on a stubborn root that Will. NOT. Give!
7. Gardening Cultivator
The gardening cultivator is one of my favorite tools to garden with. The cultivator has a few good functions. You can dig up loose dirt for planting seeds. It will also help you weed. I particularly love this because the prongs can dig up those pesky weeds without worrying about digging towards the ocean. Using a hand cultivator is easy and quick to use when it’s as hot as a ghost pepper out.
Last but not least
Did you know that: Gardening is a relaxing hobby that releases serotonin to calm you and burn off some calories during the week. Go out there and get out those frustrations with a gardening hobby. Plus, it’s also good to have the right tools to help you become a sensational gardener.
